RIP Guild Wars!
RIP Guild Wars, it's been 4 solid years but with recent events (or lack-of) peoples are leaving left and right. I just read this news on Gamespot regarding how it's possible for Blizzard to introduce WoW to the public without monthly fees.
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6213042...ewstop;title;4
This is copied straight from the article..
"WOW lead designer Tom Chilton said the dominant MMORPG could go free-to-play in the future"
I think this statement is true enough. With the current economy, peoples don't have $10 or $15 dollars to spare for those ridiculous monthly fees. Regardless, it seem like Blizzard is finally catching on the fact that without paying monthly fees is beneficial to both the consumers and themself.
Think if Blizzard *god forbid* made Diablo 3 into a MMORPG without monthly fees (or some other titles) GW/A-Net wouldn't have anything to counter them with?
I know GW is sorta different than WoW but deep down both games are labeled as MMORPG.

I'd only play WoW 'til GW2 and quit without a 2nd thought.
Blizzard cares too much about their income anyway, they'd never, it's a bunch of BS. Put 2 less than a dollar a day for wow and you can pay for wow..., like 50 cents, don't buy that soda you always buy...
NEVER gonna happen.

Well, that would be interesting if that happened, but it still doesn't really wanna make me play it, even if it does become free.

I think we're reading too much into it. This was a non-committal "maybe/possibly/we'll see/if" answer from the lead designer.

Chilton declined to comment on the subscription model for Blizzard Entertainment's upcoming top-secret MMOG. However, the WOW developer-publisher has said that the game will be an entirely new IP unique enough as to not compete with World of Warcraft.

Now whats the best way to do that? Oh I know, make WoW ftp with micro-transactions.

I've been playing WoW and Guild Wars. Made it to 80 on WoW made it 20 on Guild Wars and i'd much rather play Guild Wars. Sure you can't jump and the terrian has odd boundrys but the actual gameplay is more complex, requires more skill and looks alot better. And it's very versatile and innovative with the many class combos and has a lot of replay value because you can almost play the game however you want.

From what I've read D3 won't have the monthly fee not to mention the system requirements aren't going to be over the top.

I'm assuming they'll do this after they release SC2, D3 and their new MMORPG. Guild Wars is going to be dead before that. But, it's going to be interesting to see how GW2 is going to do against these 3 new games.

GW 2 against SC2, Diablo 3, new Blizzard MMORPG, Aion and Champions Online?
I honestly don't think it's a fair fight. At the time of release, Guild Wars had only WoW to worry about, as other MMOs were already kinda old and dated. Now, they have to compete with so many MMOs and well-designed online games, I doubt they'll make it.

WoW's most recent patch introduced very advanced graphics for the age of the engine. WoW no longer looks bad, to say the least.
WoW also is a much more complex game than Guild Wars is. Guild Wars is more skill based, that I will agree on, if not only for the fact that it has an artifical skill bias built in; limit of 8 skills and limited number of items that enchance a character.
As for PvP.... well, that is a toss up, but I would have to give it to GW at the end of the day, if only for the fact that is a completely even playing field.
However.... in the realm of PvE, WoW completely destroys Guild Wars. There isn't even a contest... Guild Wars has sad, pathetic, half assed PvE content.
And, as for PvE to PvP integration... WoW wins out easily there as well.
All in all, WoW is the superior game. With massive content updates, constant game balance, and a far more involved level of play, WoW is just something GW cannot hold water against.
That is not to say WoW doesn't have flaws... because it has many... but it is still an all around better title with a lot more content (we are talking 100s of times the amount of content)

... I will buy SC2 for an RTS game play
... I will buy D3 for sole RPG game play
... I will buy GW2 for an MMO game play
Pick dont think so i just covered 3 out of 4 game types there is.. did i not?
oh 1 more
... I Will buy Halo:Reach for FPS game play
... I will buy TOR for a Star Wars game play.....
A Smart gamer... will enjoy all equally without having to choose.. unless ofcourse money are up tight...but then again if you can afford to dish out money to upgrade your rig.... you can get all of the above 240 bucks for 4 games at their peak counds alot....but then gain you dont need to buy them all at once.
Unfair fight.. All those games compete between each other as well. its not ALL for one to destroy GW2....

I'd say on WoW the PVE in azeroth is good. It actually felt like you were kinda of exploring a large open world with the intent of doing the PVE. However its also where you got ganked the most frequently and needed and 80 in your guild to come save you. It does have a good intergration of PVP into PVE. You've got me there but it also has a lot of douchebags abusing it and I would be one of them when a level 80 is killing level 25s and 30s. For PVE once it got to burning crusade it seemed forced. Luckly I was a priest so I could instance level 60-70 in no time. But Wrath Of The Lich King... Was just shitty. I hated it. It seemed like Blizzard had almost said " yeah we know you like the game so heres some bullshit we composed and we hope it keeps busy leveling for a long time unlike burning crusade ". And I've saw WoWs latest patch and on my computer it still looks shitty, but then again Guild Wars doesnt look nearly as good on my computer as it does on others. You're right Raids are more complex then group playing on Guild Wars, but we've allready agreed on the whole skill thing so no reason to go there.

I'm not very interested in WoW. I'm not certain if I would be keen on trying it. Good news for others I guess.

I myself quit WoW because the monthly fees. Kind of strange how it took this long for WoW designers to acknowledge that going to F2P is a good idea.
Wasn't A-Net founded by a former employee from Blizzard?

WoW PvE is a joke.
1-60: Spending 30 minutes doing quests then 30 minutes flying around two continents to turn in the quests and get my rewards. Collect X item, kill Y enemy through repetitive and dull one on one combat, or talk to person Z.
61-70: All the quests start and end in the same zone so that isn't as bad but it's still the same boring XYZ formula as above. Some different looking enemies to kill in a new zone, hurray.
71-80: Oh good I got my flying mount at 70 and now I need 7 more levels before I get to use it in Northrend! Cold weather flying, yeah that makes a lot of sense. Nevermind the fact that I'm not paying the 1,000 gold for each of my flying mounts and my character can already take the flight paths. So what is the 1k gold for? Oh right, because Blizzard hates its playerbase with a passion. XYZ as before except lots and lots of snow.
Raids? Please. The difficult part is herding 25 people not the actually gameplay element. While one of the random 25 in the group takes a ninja AFK you have more than enough time to read up on the basic strategy for the boss ahead. For those who haven't played WoW there is this one boss who will cast one of two debuffs on the entire party. Depending on which you get you have to stand on one side of the boss or the other. Every 30 seconds or so the debuff may change so all you have to pay attention when that happens. Sounds easy right? Apparently not. I have yet to be in a group that does not wipe against that boss at least once because there are multiple idiots in the group who don't know their lefts from their rights. The idiocy that plagues the WoW playerbase is embarrassing.
Here is how you win PvE in WoW:
1. Heal tank.
2. Stay out of anything that appears on the floor.
3. Stay behind boss unless it's a dragon unless it's Malygos (the game likes to change the rules every now and then because Blizzard hates you)
4. Don't pull threat from tank.
I won't even talk about raid lockout periods and what that does to the community. Or enrage timers. Or banning players for depositing gold into their guild banks. Or the lag, the weekly crashes, the disconnects, loot system.
For $15 a month I expected a lot more, at the very least I expected to be able to play when I want to but no. I made the foolish mistake of making a Rogue, a melee class that can only DPS. The biggest challenge I face? Finding a freaking group. To anyone that is actually able to tolerate some of what I've mentioned never roll a class that can only damage, ever, especially not a melee, unless you have the intention of starting your own guild. Why? Because odds are if you're joining a guild they already have the maximum number of tolerable melee characters for certain raid bosses. Ranged classes are superior in every single way. Oh sure the melee might be able to pull off more damage but that slight amount is never necessary beat a boss, compared to the number of bosses where without ranged damage you're actually endangering the party's success.
Time to login to Guild Wars and do anything I want.
